CSM Certified ScrumMaster

Taught by Jeff Sutherland and James O. Coplien
November 8-9, 2010 in Malmö, Sweden

This course is sponsored by the Scrum Training Institute and will be taught by Jeff Sutherland, Co-Creator of Scrum, and Jim Coplien, author of “Organizational Patterns”.

Jeff invented Scrum at Easel Corporation in 1993 and worked with Scrum Co-Creator Ken Schwaber, to formalize the Scrum development process at OOPSLA’95. In 2001, Jeff and Ken were signatories of the Agile Manifesto. You will hear directly from one of the founders of Agile software development on how to implement best practices in your organization.

In addition to the Scrum Certification material Jeff will discuss his latest papers from Agile 2009. These will provide real world experience on how new ScrumMasters can implement world class teams.

Jim Coplien is the founder of the Pasteur Organizational Patterns project, which was the foundation for the Borland QuatroPro for Windows study that inspired Jeff Sutherland to include daily stand-up meetings in Scrum. This work was also one of the main foundations underlying the organizational principles of Extreme Programming. In a former life Cope is best known for his design and programming books such as Advanced C++, Multi-Paradigm Design, and the pioneering two books of the PLoPD series of edited works. Description

The course will Run 9:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday and Tuesday. Participants should read Ken Schwaber’s book, Agile Project Management with Scrum, or Jeff Sutherland’s draft of The Scrum Papers before the class as we will assume you know the basics of Scrum.

In this course, participants will learn how to stop thrashing and start executing along with everything necessary for getting started with Scrum. There are very few rules to Scrum so it is important to learn its fundamental principles by experiencing them directly from those who have implemented the best Scrums in the software industry. Participants gain hands-on practice with the release backlog, sprint backlog, the daily Scrum meeting, tracking progress with a burndown chart, and more. Participants experience the Scrum process through a “59-minute Scrum” and the "XP Game” which simulate Scrum projects through non-technical group exercises.

Following the course, each participant is enrolled as a Certified ScrumMaster, which includes a one-year membership in the Scrum Alliance, where additional Certified ScrumMaster-only material and information are available.

Who Should Attend:
Everyone who is currently on a Scrum team or who plans to be on a Scrum team. Scrum teams are cross-functional, so even if you’re not a developer, this course will help you be a more effective contributor to your Scrum team. Managers will learn how they can support Scrum teams, and Project Managers will learn new ways of looking at product development.

PMPs:
You can receive 16 Professional Development Units (PDUs) for this course.

Course Material:
Participants will receive course materials for review at the start of the course. A course syllabus is available for download at http://jeffsutherland.com/csmsyllabus.pdf

The CSM course was formulated to train and certify ScrumMasters and is used worldwide for ScrumMaster training. The book, Agile Project Management with Scrum, by Ken Schwaber is required reading for the course and the course is based on the primary Scrum book, Agile Development with Scrum.

Of course, there will be updated material and training exercises in the course which you cannot get from books.
